GARTNER BLADE

Ashley Falls, Massachusetts

Gartner Blade Glass is the work of Danielle Blade and Stephen Gartner. Business partners since 1995, Danielle and Stephen combine their individual ideas, techniques, and experiences to create original works in blown and sculpted hot glass.

Over the past decade they have been developing a series of pieces that explore their interpretation of objects of ritual and worship. The inspiration for these pieces begins with their mutual fascination with the many vessels and sculptural objects revered in the rituals and ceremonies of both primitive and contemporary cultures. Natural elements such as bone, wood, vines, and rock formations combine with their highly original color palette to inform their signature designs. Their work merges traditional, hand-blown techniques with innovative color application and original sculpting techniques.

Originally from the Isle of Wight in the U.K., Danielle is the daughter of British glass artist Martin Evans. After an apprenticeship at Isle of Wight Glass, she moved to the U.S. in 1985. Prior to establishing Gartner Blade Glass, she studied with prominent American and European glass artists, and was employed as a glasshouse gaffer and a glassblowing instructor. Stephen was born 1964 in Phoenix, AZ., grew up near Charleston, South Carolina, and spent a few years living in Naples, Italy. He began his glass making career as a lampworker in 1993, making animal figurines, paperweights, and floral sculptures.
